Our mothers had an expression they used: Who died and left you God?
Several items that crossed our news feeder this morning brought that adage to mind. The first was the closing of Metaplace. We won’t try and tell you that we were big fans of Metaplace. But as all our readers and listeners know we ARE big fans of independent game developers. In fact we would go so far as to say that if anything that is large is compared to “the State of Texas” anything that is large in Texas is usually compared to our attitude about independent game developers.
Why?
It’s just in our nature s(see earlier story about the scorpion and the frog crossing a river).
Raph Koster himself gives the reason as being “…it just hasn’t gotten traction” (see article here). Sente over at “A Ding World”claims “I am probably one of those people that is the reason the service is closing down.” (We personally doubt it but the quote does say ‘one of’ – see article here.) What all this does is bring to mind the time Tipa took a risk by telling the guests and hosts on No Prisoners, No Mercy show number 49 she felt qualified to judge us all because she had a blog – all just to make a point (she wasn’t serious by the way).
Here is another quote that crossed our news feed this morning, via Game Politics.Com (one of our favorite sites). We won’t give you the quote, as much as we love Game Politics, because they were quoting a group to which we have no intention of giving a pingback.
“All decent people should denounce the video game ‘Modern Warfare 2;’ and join in opposing the sale and use of such games. Moreover, it may be time for Maine to begin a debate over the advisability of banning these games completely, giving due consideration to both the First Amendment, and the danger these violent games pose to the public.”
Another post that crossed our news feeder was Tobold’s post “Syncaine insults Lum – Pass the popcorn” (available here). It appears that “Syncaine” took exception to an article written by Scott “Lum the Mad” Jennings. The result was that, with the calm and eloquent tone most of his articles take, Syncaine starts out his “Failure post failure” (available here) by doing his best impression of a monkey throwing his crap.
Now we seriously doubt that anyone over at Activision will be losing any sleep over the call for “all decent people” to “denounce” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And like Tobold, we think it would be interesting to read a response to Syncaine’s post by Scott Jennings (We doubt it will ever happen.)
Where all this is going is this:
We realize it is a matter of hotly contested debate, but it was not that long ago that one of our friends who develops video games for a living told us that the average “professional” reviewer spends one or two levels with the product they are reviewing. The average blogger is sometimes worse. Such is the example of the blogger who spent 10 minutes of Aion in the beta and regaled us all with the eloquent review “It sucks” (We can only imagine how long author of that review must have pondered over his words). Many is the time we have seen reviews show less thought than the average six year old puts in to whether or not he should eat his popsicle or read his comic book.”
Quite simply, we immediately dismiss every review we read that ends with the author uttering a statement they feel should be tantamount to an edict from God. Those that merit our attention are well thought out analyses, followed by an entreaty to go try the game yourself.
And yes, while we are on the subject, we did have someone who decided to throw some crap over the fence into our playground. But the best part about having your own playground, like No Prisoners No Mercy.com, is that when some monkey tries to throw crap over the fence we don’t have to let it land. Yes, we will be the first to admit that we have our spam filters set tighter than a drunken sailor on shore leave on a Saturday night. Still, it’s our playground and we do have our favorite causes. Sometimes we feel like a good debate, and in fact Julie just loves to take out the ol’ ruler and give some deserving monkey knuckles a well deserved wack when they try and throw their poo over our collective fence.
So before we leave you, we will leave you with a link to a well thought out review to one of the games we have been playing lately. Take a look over at Lorewriter.com for the article…then go try the game on the trial server make your own judgment here. And here are a few pics (following) of the place you will ultimately be going of you head over to the trial server. If you think the game is great let us know we will pass the word along the devs. If you think of some changes, the same advice goes. If you just want to hurl monkey crap over our fence be aware that we just might hurl monkey crap back.

That sentence should be taken outside and shot. And it’s not the only one. Also, you seem to have accidentally posted a screenshot from the Ashenvale Forest among the Alganon screenshots. Oh, wait..
Anyway, onto Metaplace. I tried it and I was somewhat underwhelmed. I realize that I’m probably not in the target audience of a socializing MMO, but I didn’t see anything in it that would differentiate it from competitors like Habbo Hotel. And for an app that relies on user-created content, the clunky creation tools were the dealbreaker for me. The built-in importing of 3D models from Google was nice, but one really shouldn’t have to make buildings piece-by-piece or do busywork like browsing through almost-identical tiles to make sure that the edges between gravel and grass line up properly.
Anyway, reviews on the Internet (like mine above) worth their price: Nearly zero. You might not spend money to read one, but you are using your precious, limited time. But when you round up reviews from multiple sources, each adding their tiny bit of value, you can get a general sense of whether something’s worth any more of your time.
Naturally, one in-depth review can do more in convincing you than a hundred blog posts or comments can, but in the age where payola has moved from radio play to game reviews, the hundred blog posts can be more truthful than that one review. It’s impossible to bribe everyone.
Very sorry about Metaplace. I’d hoped to dive in and make content there at some point. I’ve decided to get into games-making and decided in the end to go the Oblivion modding route instead. (Thanks for promoting the Engineering guild on the show btw, they’re a great find for me).
As for the blog wars I’m afraid to say I find them rather entertaining. In my defence I would say it’s hard to imagine someone who could possibly be more prepared than Lum for ad hominem attacks, the original piece that sparked it all off was all about people who behave like Syncaine.
Regarding Alganon I have been a little put off by how closely it seemed to resemble WoW. It seemed to a number of bloggers that they had crossed the line from “influenced by” to “ripping off”. How do you feel now that you’re actually playing it?
Lastly thanks for the podcasts, I love the show. Please send my regards to Sister Fran.
@ Hirvox: I will make sure that I soundly beat the staffer that wrote the article above for not properly proof reading. Thank you for keeping us all honest. As to the contention that we posted a pic of Ashenvale Forest among the Alganon shots…
(Flings monkey poo at Hirvox)
As to your comment on Metaplace I will have to take your word for it…no one here ever availed themselves the opportuntity to try it out. We are all more of the “game world” than “social world” types here.
As to reviews, there is certainly something to be said for considering reviews “in aggregate”…I will certainly concede that point.
@Stabs: You are quite correct, in that blog wars, like flame wars can sometimes be entertaining. As to “Lum the Mad” – well I will certainly agree with your assessment. There is little doubt in my mind that Scott Jennings could slice and dice Syncaine should he chose to do so.
As far as Alganon is concerned I will agree with what thier community manager said during our last recording session…once I hit level 5 or 6 my impression of the game changed entirely. As to whether the art style is so similar to WoW that it goes beyond “influenced by” it seems to me somehow ironic that anyone would accuse one developer of doing to Activision/Blizzard what they have happliy done to others. As R.W. Harper points out in his review, Alganon is a world that is evolving and my hope is that it will evolve in such a way that it does not give me those aspects of game play that irritate me like industrial grade sandpaper.
Thanks for the compliment on the show. The owner of Virgin Worlds is currently changing over the site to a whole new system that will alleviate some of the delays in the shows going to Itunes. Until then we will continue to post early releases of the show.
I will certainly give your regards to Sister Fran but I think you just did.
Julie
“I will certainly give your regards to Sister Fran but I think you just did.”
Ha ha, well I think she mentioned on one of your shows she doesn’t always read this site but if you’ve forgotten then far be it from me to remind you.
Erm, oops!
Reminders are always appreciated of course…one “no prize” (and you have to be a Stan “the man” Lee fan to know what a “no prize” is) to the first person who can remember where the quote “…a fat inkeeper who only remembers his own name because people shout it at him all day long” comes from. Fortunately I remember my own name (except for the beginings of shows – which of course after awhile became something that Fran and I just do).
The site she doesn’t pay that much attention to is http://www.virginworlds.com. In fact this site she has spent quite a bit of time with.
Julie
Hmmm.. Hawk the Slayer?
And apologies Sister Fran, I stand corrected.
Don’t stand…maybe sit corrected.
I have never heard of “Hawk the Slayer”… Julie says (she’s good at those sort of things) that its from the animated version of the Lord of the Rings. “Strider” says it to the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony, accusing him of being a “Fat Inkeeper who only remembers his own name because people shout it at him all day”.
And hello right back to you Stabs and Merry Christmas
