I believe we have already proferred our opinion on the entire situation. Right and wrong? I believe the phrase we used was “unenlightened” which is not the same thing. And might we suggest that the best person with whom to debate the Keen and Graevs website are those who write for the Keen and Graevs website. No one on staff here has ever written anything for them.

You forgot to put in your opinion at the end. Not trying to be rude but your general response tone kind of smacks of Tobold esk smugness of ‘Im right and your wrong’. Its opinions! So obviously peoples will differ.

I am glad you are not asking us to “out” a guy who knows a guy…we would never do it.

Beyond that, I am glad you aren’t trying to convince anyone of anything. You are welcome to discuss gaming, blogging and anything else. Talk away.

However we also will have our say that Keen is a intelligent, interesting writer that graps our attention and the Hard Core Casual assessment of Keen’s abilities and many of the others he faults, especially Tobold, are unenlightened, and most times the comments are based on personal attacks rather than assertions of any real worth.

Hmmm, perhaps your back is up to much for this. I’m having a conversation, and noone is asking for you to “out” a guy who knows a guy. The goal is to talk about gaming, blogging, and how they intermingle in regards to one particular member of the community. I don’t need to convince anyone of anything, I’m just talking.

If you love Keen’s writing, more power to you. Enjoy it. Not everyone does, and they have clear and fully enlightened reasons for it.

The thing about anonymous contacts or as I call them “the guy who knows a guy” is that if you tell anyone who they are they stop being anonymous contacts and rapidly start being industry professionals who don’t talk to you any more.

Beyond that…what are you trying to accomplish here? Are you trying to convince someone on staff here that Keen isn’t a compelling writer? Good luck with that one. Are you trying to convince us that you don’t like his writing? That’s apparent. Are you trying to convince Keen of something? I know he reads our web site but if you want to reach keen might we suggest you try keen@keenandgraev.com

Everyone is entitled to their opinions of course. But what makes a person a good blogger, and what makes them insightful are not necessarily the same thing. To create another analogy, reading his blog is like sitting next to my wife while she “watches” TV. Constantly flipping the channel, never settling on one program. I walk away with a generaly good idea of what happened across multiple stations/genres/story lines, but I never gain any strong understanding of what I just experienced.

In the same way, it becomes clear from any significant amount of time reading his blog, that he never settles on one topic for any length of time. By the very nature of this type of activity, it leads to a more shallow experience on his end, and results in the same for the reader. So while your anonymous contacts may have posed inquiries on his professional status, his blogging style leaves much to be desired by a significant amount of people, not soley contained to people who are also fans of Syncaine.

Well I would say the webmaster is pretty much “spot on” to what I would have said. I guess that’s why we pay him so much (hahahahaha). In any case I could say something like “The Hardcore Casual” blog smacks of more pompous attitudes than a 17th century French court, or that it is usually more tedious to read than a text on tax law, and that wouldn’t necessarily make it some sort of absolute truth. So we can agree on that…the absolute truth part, not the rest. I am sure you would disagree. And I will admit that the only part of Hard Core Casual I read is when he attacks Tobold. Hey the rooster fight is at least entertaining.

Obviously I can’t speak for Sister Julie. However for my two cents if you are unenlightened it is for failure to allow that others, including the professional developers of our acquaintance, feel that he is a very good blogger. So much so that a Senior Producer of our acquaintance wrote to us to ask “where does he work?”, Wondering if he was already an industry professional.

Perhaps before passing judgment on keen you might want to listen to those shows where he has been our guest. Unfortunately, you can’t listen to a show with Tobold as a guest because, as he does with everyone apparently, he turned down our invitation to be live.

Because a person disagrees with your opinion on another person’s opinions, they’re unenlightened? I first found K&Gs blog when I was becoming involved in the WAR blogging community. It took but a few short months to see him bounce between another handful of games as his “game of choice”. The preverbial straw on the camel’s back of credibility came with the release of Champion’s Online, where he displayed a complete inability to articulate specifics for his opinions, or explain the reasoning behind his proclomations.

Reading his blog had become like watching a child with ADHD flip channels, then throw the remote on the ground, yelling out that cartoons today are nowhere near as good as Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner.

@ Shadow War: I wonder if Hard Core Casual thought that Keen was wonderful and a gift to manking would you think that way because he did? Whether you would or not you will never get anyoneone here to agree with you except to say that you are entitled to your opinion where keen is concerned…no matter how unenlightened it may be.

@ Pitrellii: The shake our collective heads is an inside joke for the rest of the NPNM team. I do understand about Tobold not publishing his comments…Tobold, as do many of us, reserves the right to who gets to “play in his yard.” Sometimes we disagree with Tobold, sometimes we agree. This time we agree, and Hard Core Casual’s arguement to the contrary doesn’t hold weight.
